Expenses attending Your trip to Manilla defrayed, to the amount of upwards of Twelve Hundred Company's Rupees (1200) and have been admitted in your Accounts, His Excellency does not feel himself justified in granting You any extra allowance without the special sanction of Her Majesty's Government, to whom your application will be submitted.

As soon as the total sum realized by the sale of the Timber shall be ascertained, I am further desired to enclose an Account prepared in the Treasurer's Office, showing the Cost of the Timber and estimated sum to be realized from its sale, which latter amount will be hereafter definitely ascertained and then reported.

(Signed) Richard Macdonnell

No 52.

Major General,

The Lord Saltoun, M.C.B., H.G.C.H.

My Lord,

An application having been made by Lieut: Auchterlony for some extra allowance during the period he was absent at Manilla and for the charge of the Government Timber, I have the honor to forward to Your Lordship:

1. Copy of the reply which has been this day written to him.

I also forward, an Account which has been prepared in this office, showing the actual cost of the Timber, and the sum for which Lieut: Auchterlony has estimated that it should be nominally sold in carrying out the Public Works, and which Account exhibits an apparent gain to Government.

Victoria, August 8th, 1865.
